Film Theory: Dwight "Dewey" Riley (David Arquette) dies in Scream 5.
I feel like Dewey might finally bite the bullet in this one. Two parts of the trailer are significant to this theory:
Number 1 is at 2:00 into the official trailer and shows a brief glimpse of a scene where Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox) appears distraught outside a crime scene and screams in slow motion whilst Sydney holds her back.
Number 2 is at 1:45 and shows what appears to be some sort of final confrontation between Dewey and Ghostface.
Here is the link:
The rest of this theory is based on the evidence we have so far and is as follows:
Not only is he seen looking very disheveled and worn out in the trailer when compared to the other two (Sydney and Gale) which may indicate that he is finally fed up with the whole ordeal and wants to end his part in this mess one way or the other, but he is also given the "Randy's Rules Mantra" which feels somewhat significant, given who they gave those lines to in the last film.
There is also the fact that as time moves on, the actors are unfortunately getting older and with rumors of a 6th film on the horizon already circulating, they may be wanting to bow out now before they end up playing the same character for another 10 years or more.
A huge part of me doesn't want to see any of the main 3 bite the dust (especially Dewey) but a part of me also feels like it's time the Scream franchise finally went there. We haven't had a main cast death since Scream 2 (Randy Meeks) and it kinda feels like now is the time. Also, if I'm honest with myself, who better to kill off than the lovable and adorable Dewey?
Who always manages to save everyone else, but never himself?
It'll definitely make more of an impact than the slightly less lovable and more annoying Gale, plus it's highly unlikely that they will be killing off Sydney until they are either definitively done with the franchise, or have set their sights on a proper reboot. (I know they are calling this one the "Scream Reboot" but I mean a fully-fledged one.)
Anyway, thanks for reading folks and I hope to hear your thoughts and opinions down below, as well as hear any theories you folks may have regarding both this latest installment of the franchise and the series as a whole.
